Hope Spring Summer Collection 2020

    Feel Beautiful confident

The transition from spring to summer can make us antsy if your itching to get out of spring and feel that energised life that naturally comes with summer. We want to feel that in our wardrobes too! The problem is sometimes its still a little cold during the late spring months, so how do you channel spring to summer vibes without being warmed up first?

Let us know which pieces are your favourite on Facebook.

Hope is the British women’s wear label founded by Nayna McIntosh, designed to empower and inspire the 40 plus women. The latest collection is inspired by the sunset over the sand dunes of the Sahara, incorporating a warm palette of blush pink, chalk and stone which is perfectly paired with the richer tobacco, terracotta and Khaki. The blend of colour with pattern from this collection has made the seasonal transition easy for any fashionista.

Proving once and for all that the elegance of minimalism is back and she here to stay. Fashion's love of simple style is still going strong, but with Hope's latest striped accent jumper paired with their casual matching trainers, this is truly an outfit ready for the seasonal change with both comfort and warmth as well as style and sophistication.

Yes ladies, pink is officially chic. It's a trend all on its own, with a soft warmth that positively glows, and shows a depth that other pastels just can't lay claim to. Guys, it’s no longer the stuff of fluffy saccharine and Barbie girl dreams. The perfect pastel lies somewhere between saturated dusty rose and classically neutral light cream. Under the eyes of the designer from Hopes' new collection, it is fresh, defiant and on occasion even subversive.

  • Potion London

We are delighted to launch a wonderful new beauty brand in de Gruchy - Potion London – with their range of luxury wellness supplements which improve overall health and reveal the true beauty within. We invited them to tell us a little more…

    Beauty from Within

It’s an old saying but the adage “you are what you eat” really is true. The skin is our largest organ and it only takes around 21 days for skin cells to turn over and reveal new skin.

Skin cells are fed nutrients from the blood supply which means that the nutrients you take into your body through food and supplements feed the skin and have a direct impact on the health of the skin.

What nutrients does the skin need?

To stay healthy, the skin needs a varied diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables to feed it the nutrients it needs. Even with the healthiest of diets, we’re exposed to free radicals every day which can damage healthy cells and contribute to premature ageing. Free radicals are caused by exposure to the sun, pollution and cigarette smoke. Antioxidants can neutralise these free radicals to help prevent the damage that causes premature ageing. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are powerful antioxidants which are essential for healthy skin from the inside-out, and they are found in the Potion London Beauty Formula, along with 17 other nutrients for healthy skin, hair and nails.

    Can collagen prevent premature ageing?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body; the ‘scaffolding’ that keeps our skin strong. When we’re young, collagen is abundant in our bodies because we need it to help our skin, bones and muscles grow at a rapid rate. But when we reach our mid-twenties, the rate at which collagen is produced in the body declines each year. This is when we start to notice the early signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. Collagen is very hard to get from the diet – it’s thought that we would have to drink litres of bone broth every day to get enough collagen! So this is where a supplement can help – delivering a dose of collagen quickly and easily each day. The Potion London Collagen Boost contains Marine Collagen which is the most bioavailable form of collagen you can get.

But my face cream contains anti-ageing ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, isn’t that enough?

Ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C and Vitamin A are great in skincare as they can help to improve the appearance of the surface of the skin and have their place in helping to reduce the signs of ageing from the outside. The nutrients can only penetrate through the top layers of the skin, so they don’t really have an effect on the new skin cells as they are growing and forming new skin. Hyaluronic Acid can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water inside skin cells and so when taken as a supplement it can help to improve skin hydration at a molecular level. Well hydrated skin cells not only help to plump the skin, but good hydration also helps nutrients to efficiently move into skin cells to feed the skin, and helps waste products to efficiently move out of the skin cells to keep them healthy. The Potion London Hyaluronic Complex contains Hyaluronic Acid along with Vitamin C and MSM which is considered to be a powerful anti-ageing nutrient.

Is there a link between gut health and the skin?

Even our gut health can have a direct impact on the skin. It is thought that an unhealthy gut might be responsible for leaking toxins into the bloodstream which can then show up as issues in the skin. So healing the gut and ensuring it has a diverse range of friendly bacteria could potentially help to improve skin problems. The National Eczema Association has found that “high doses of Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotics in single or multi-strain formulations currently hold the most promise for prevention and treatment of eczema”. You can find all three strains of bacteria mentioned in the Potion London Probiotics. ( )

Is there a link between gut health and the skin?

So what should I be doing to feed my skin?

Eating a healthy diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables is a good place to start, and if you feel like you need a helping hand or you want a boost of certain nutrients, then a supplement can help to give you the reassurance that you’re helping your skin from the inside-out.

The Potion London range of health and beauty supplements is now available at de Gruchy.

    ‘Primavera’ Fried Rice Recipe

     Serves 4

Making use of the abundance of fresh asparagus, this recipe pairs traditional Japanese flavours with spring onions and fresh garlic to create a recipe that is both delicious and easy to cook.

     Preparation time: 10 minutes

    Cooking time: 20 minutes

    2 tablespoons blended olive oil

    1 onion, finely diced

    4 cloves garlic, finely chopped

    2cm ginger, peeled and shredded

150g – 200g peas (frozen is fine, but use fresh if they’re in season)

150g asparagus, woody ends removed and cut into 1-inch chunks

4 large portions cooked rice (350g – 400g uncooked rice) ideally from the day before

    1 teaspoon salt, to taste

    1½ tablespoons mirin

    ¼ teaspoon dashi powder

    ¼ lemon, zest and juice

    4 spring onions, roughly chopped

    Black pepper, to taste

1 teaspoon toasted white sesame seeds

A big handful (40-50g) wild garlic leaves, coarsely chopped (if you can’t get wild garlic, add more chopped garlic and use spinach instead)

    1. Place the wok over a medium heat and add the oil and the onion. Stir-fry until translucent and beginning to brown, then add the garlic, ginger, peas, and asparagus.
    2. Stir-fry for about five minutes, until the vegetables are cooked through, then add the rice, salt, mirin, dashi powder, and lemon zest and juice.
    3. Break up the rice with a wooden spoon or spatula as you stir-fry, ensuring that there are no clumps.
    4. When the rice has absorbed all the liquid in the pan, add the spring onions, pepper, and white sesame seeds. Cook for a few more minutes, then remove from heat and add the wild garlic. Stir through until they’ve wilted thoroughly. Serve in shallow bowls.

    Cook’s Notes

    • Please ensure the rice is piping hot and do not reheat this recipe once made
  • Pancake Tuesday 2020

    PANCAKE DAY 2020

The one day of the year when it's perfectly acceptable to throw food around the kitchen is finally here! Let us know what your family Pancake Day traditions on Facebook and Instagram.

Pancake day, where did it come from? – Pancake day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is historically the last day before lent starts, all eggs, butter and stocks of fat would be used up to stop temptations. One of the easiest ways to dispose of these items was to turn them into pancakes or fritters. In the US its called Mardi Gras, which means ‘Fat Tuesday’.

One legacy of this day is pancake racing. Acting from around 1445, legend has it that local women heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. There’s also an annual pancake grease at Westminster School in London. A verger from the Abbey leads a procession of boys into the playground where the school cook tosses a pancake over a five-meter high bar. The children then race to grab some of the pancake - the one who ends up with the largest piece receives a cash prize from the Dean.

A perfect addition to your kitchen just in time for Pancake day is the artisan stand mixer (£494.10), getting all thoughs lumps and bumps out of your pancakes, so they are light, fluffy and delicious. The Zyliss non-stick frying pan, helping your family create the perfect pancakes this year with no butter or oil necessary.

The perfect utensil for the chef who hates waste, re-inventing the spatula at every turn(£3.50). The head has been cleverly crafted to include a set of ultra-soft flexible fins to quickly clean whisk and mixers of excess batter, while the firmer outer edge hugs surfaces making fast work of scraping mixing bowls and pans – so you will never have to waste a drop. Or go back to basics with the kids with a safe rubber whisks (£3.50), so they can get involved in the baking with you.

    135g self-raising,
    1tsp baking powder
    ½ tbsp caster sugar
    130ml milk
    1 large egg lightly beaten

1.Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and caster sugar into a large bowl. In a separate bowl or jug, lightly whisk together the milk and egg, then whisk in the melted butter.

2.Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and, using a fork, beat until you have a smooth batter. Any lumps will soon disappear with a little mixing. Let the batter stand for a few minutes.

    1. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and add a knob of butter. When it's melted, add a ladle of batter (or two if your frying pan is big enough to cook two pancakes at the same time). It will seem very thick, but this is how it should be. Wait until the top of the pancake begins to bubble, then turn it over and cook until both sides are golden brown, and the pancake has risen to about 1cm / ½ inch thick.

4.Repeat until all the batter is used up. You can keep the pancakes warm in a low oven, but they taste best fresh out the pan.

5.Serve with lashings of real maple syrup and extra butter, if you like.

    125g gluten-free plain flour
    250ml milk

    1. Put the flour in a bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the egg in the middle and pour in a quarter of the milk. Use an electric or balloon whisk to thoroughly combine the mixture. Once you have a paste, mix in another quarter and once lump free, mix in the remaining milk. Leave to rest for 20 mins. Stir again before using.
    2. Heat a small non-stick frying pan with a knob of butter. When the butter starts to foam, pour a small amount of the mixture into the pan and swirl around to coat the base – you want a thin layer. Cook for a few mins until golden brown on the bottom, then turn over and cook until golden on the other side. Repeat until you have used all the mixture, stirring the mixture between pancakes and adding more butter for frying as necessary.
    3. Serve with agave syrup and a squeeze of orange juice or your pancake filling of choice.

  • Bra Fit Challenge 2020

You would never leave home in the morning in a pair of shoes that made your feet feel unsecure and lost, or so small that you feel like you are going to burst out of them, so why is it that an astonishing 80% of us women in the UK are wearing the wrong bra size?

Wearing a bra is a part of more than half of every day life for most women, so it's important that you are wearing the correct size for optimal comfort. We've been talking to our expert in-store Lingerie fitters who have shared some of the industry's top advice when it comes to finding the right fit, and some of their secrets are strap-dropping!

With no stream line fitting in the Lingerie industry, no two bras fit the same. A 32C bra manufactured in England will not necessarily fit the same as a 32C bra manufactured in Japan, that's why it is important to try on and be professionally fitted for each purchase.

Wearing a bra that doesn't support your breast tissue can not just effect your comfort levels, but it can actually effect the appearance of other parts of your body. As well as causing premature sagging and deep creases, wearing the wrong size can also cause strain on your neck and throat muscles, meaning even the most luxury decolletage creams won't be enough to do the trick. Get a professional fit and support in all of the right areas before it's too late!

The age old myth suggests that your bra straps are the support lines that carry the bulk of the weight from your breasts, this is actually very incorrect!

The right bra should never dig or sink into your body in any place, even on your shoulders. So if you're taking your bra off after a long day and have deep indentation marks or find yourself moving your straps throughout the day to take some pressure off, it's time to go get fitted.

Support for your breasts should come from the band of the bra underneath the tissue, holding the it up in place without pulling on any other area of the body, you shouldn't rely on tight straps for security in your cups.

There are five key checks you should make before you purchase a new bra, these are essential to make sure you've got the right fit to help lift your posture and accentuate all the right places in your figure.

Underband – This should be parallel to the floor and secure enough that only two fingers can fit underneath the band

Centre front – should sit completely flat against the sternum

Side wire – this should be flat against the ribcage and never digging into breast tissue

Cup capacity – breasts should sit fully into the cup without any spillage

Bra Straps – these should be adjusted to just fit two fingers on top of each other, which will give the right pressure for your shoulder

It is suggested by experts that you should be getting fitted every 6 months to prevent damage to your breast tissue, this is because your body shape and size changes regularly so you don't want to risk compressing your tissue into a bra that's too small or not providing enough support.

Join us in store from the 13th-15th of February 2020 to take the Bra Fit Challenge, enjoy 10% off any bras purchased during your free fitting session, no appointment required!

What are you waiting for? Find your fit now!
